A Winam resident magistrate court in Kisumu has fined a 20-year-old mother for neglecting her three year old daughter.
Harriet Auma was fined Sh5,000 by Winam resident magistrate Kennedy Ouko for knowingly leaving her daughter in the house without any care.
In passing the ruling, Ouko condemned the act which is said have occurred on diverse dates between January and November last year.
“It is inhumane to leave your child without any care. Treating young children as grown-ups in uncalled for, once you decide to have a child you must also be ready to take care of her,” said Ouko.
In her defence Auma said that, she acted so due to circumstances.
“Your honour, I was supposed to look for food and I did not have enough money to leave the baby at any daycare. I would ask this court to be lenient with me for what happened because it was not intentionally,” said Auma.
During the previous hearing, the court heard that Auma, a resident of Mamboleo in Kisumu had a habit of leaving her daughter in the house without any food.
Residents, who got fed up with the behavior, warned her but she became persistent, prompting them to report the matter to the police, who arrested her in November last year and charged her.
