A woman was on Friday fined Sh25,000 for operating an unlicensed bar.

A Kisii court told her to pay the fine or serves 16 months in prison for running an unlicensed business.

Irene Nyakwama who appeared before the Kisii acting Chief Magistrate Joseph Otieno pleaded guilty to the charge that on September 22, at Titanic bar in Gesonso she was found by Administration Police officers on patrol selling alcoholic drinks to her customers without a licence.

The AP officers impounded a crate of assorted brands of beer which was brought before the court as exhibit.

In mitigation, Irene said she was the sole breadwinner for her family and she begged the court for leniency, promising not to conduct her alcohol business again without a license.

This comes barely after the county administration warned the business community from running business without permits.

The governor of Kisii James Ongwae said the county will be using digital means to collect tax compared to the current manual way.
