A middle-aged woman has been found dead in her house in Athi River town under unclear circumstances.
A neighbour, Purity Mbithe, found the body of 35-year-old Janet Kieti on Wednesday – two days after she was last seen.
Mbithe, who claimed to be one of the deceased's closest friends, said she sensed all was not well when she went two days without seeing her.
“We just used to be good friends such that she would pass through my house or I would visit her in the evening,” said Mbithe.
“I saw her on Sunday evening doing the laundry but we didn’t talk much. On Monday after job [I]didn’t come back home. I spent the night elsewhere,” said Mbithe.
Mbithe said she checked on Kieti’s door on Wednesday morning, but she did not get a response.
“I knocked at her door but got no response. I ignored and just thought maybe she had gone to work.”
Mbithe said that she smelled an odour in her compound on Wednesday afternoon.
“I decided to look on her window which had not been closed only to find out that the offensive smell was coming out of my neighbour’s house.”
With the help of neighbours, police were called. They broke into the house and found the body of the deceased in the house's washroom.
Confirming the incident, Athi River police boss Kizito Mutoro said the body had been moved to the Machakos County level 5 hospital.
Police have launched investigations into the cause of her death.
