Police in Thika sub-county are investigating a woman allegedly caught after selling her new-born baby for Sh1,000.
Confirming the incident, Thika police boss Shadrack Maithya said the woman gave birth on Sunday at Witeithie estate and it was noted by the neighbours that two days after, the kid was nowhere to be found.
“Investigations are underway to get the woman who took the baby. The culprit has admitted giving away the baby (for) Sh1,000 and she will be arraigned in court,” Maithya said.
Naomi Wanjiru, 29, said she did not sell her child but gave out to the woman who was unable to bear one in Nairobi.
The mother of three added that she was unable to raise the baby, claiming that even her 16-year-old son is supported by her grandparents who have been paying his fees since he was young.
Community health workers in the area had purportedly been notified of the birth and had come to visit the mother and vaccinate the baby only to find the young one missing.
They reported the matter to Witeithie administrator, Sergeant James Linguli, who made the arrest and took the mother to Thika police station.
“I got information from the community health workers who noticed the woman did not have her child when they were on their vaccination duty,” Linguli said.
The suspect is in police custody awaiting to appear in court once investigations are complete.
