A 45-year-old woman will spend her Christmas in custody after a court in Nakuru remanded her on Thursday, after facing charges of stealing two sheep from her neighbour’s farm.
According to the prosecution desk, Damaris Waithera unlawfully entered her neighbours’ farm at kwa mwaura village in Njoro sub-county on December 14 at around 10am, and maliciously moved two sheep from it with an intention of selling them to a butchery operator.
Presiding Chief Resident Magistrate Felix Kombo heard that the accused, who is a frequent visitor to the farm that belongs to Jonathan Koskei was in company of two young men, who later run away after another neigbour raised an alarm.
The prosecution desk added that the owner of the farm and his family members were away attending a church service in Njoro town, but he was called and informed about the incident by another neigbour before he reported the matter at the Njoro Police Station.
He was accompanied by police to the scene of crime and found curious members of the public gathered there.
The court heard that the accused was arrested with the two animals near her home. She pleaded guilty to the charges and in mitigation said she intended to graze the animals and earn a few shillings from Koskei to buy her children food.
She was remanded before the mention of the case on December 29.
