A middle-aged woman was on Thursday charged at a court in Nakuru for running a counterfeit birth certificates syndicate in Nakuru town.
Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Mwaniki was told by the prosecution desk that the accused, Hellen Waithera with others who were not before court have been collecting money from a section of residents in Nakuru town and its environs, claiming that they were birth certificates processing agents who could deliver to them the certificates in a short period.
The court heard that the acussed, 35, on November 27 this year at Free-Area estate obtained Sh3,000 from one, Jane Nyambura while promising to deliver to her, her son’s birth certificate within one week.
However the accused was arrested on December 6 this year, after investigations by police with the help of Nyambura and other victims of the scum discovered that the accused came up fake birth certificates.
The court further heard that the accused was arrested with several fake birth certificates after police raided her house at Kanyon estate. She denied the charges and was released on a Sh50,000 bond.
The case will be heard on January 7.
