The accused, Catherine Kamau appeared before C Martha Mutuku, charged that on May 20, 2011 at Ruiru township of Kiambu County, she jointly with others not before court with an intent to defraud obtained a sum of Sh400,000 shillings from Florence Maina, pretending that they were in a position to sell her a parcel of land, Mugutha Block 1/T 2290, knowing very well the land was not on sale.

The accused further produced a fake title deed purporting it to be genuine and a fake identity card in order to convince the unsuspecting land buyer that they were selling her a genuine piece of land with clean sets of documents.

The court was told how the complainant had a shock of her life when she went to a surveyor to have her parcel of land verified, only to be told that piece of land does not exist and that the documents she was holding were fake and useless, and an attempt to verify the title deed, which had purportedly been issued in 2007 were also futile, as the title deed was a fake document.

The complainant reported the matter to the police, but the accused person went into hiding, only to reappear early last year when she was arrested.

The accused will remain in police custody at Ruiru station, as further investigations to other fraud cases against her were still under investigation.
