A woman in Nyairanga village, Ekerenyo sub-county in Nyamira is nursing injuries she sustained during a quarrel with a village-mate over the next MP for North Mugirango.
The woman who is admitted to Ekerenyo sub-district hospital said Friday, she was confronted by the assailant as she was going to the shop to buy food for breakfast.
The 9am incident started when a commotion was heard in one of the local shops which was followed by a bitter exchange of words and insults.
The noise and cries drew the attention of the locals who came closer to establish the real reason for the drama.
One of the witnesses said the woman received several blows and kicks from a youthful man who was identified as “Diego” alias Senator over what they termed as political disagreement.
She told this writer that “Diego” approached her and requested her to publicly declare and campaign for his preferred candidate for the parliamentary seat come 2017, and when she declined, the man started hurling insults at her which were followed by kicks and blows. the man fled after causing the harm and is still at large.
The woman was later rushed to hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment.
She has also recorded a statement at Ekerenyo police station and the matter is under investigation.
Residents who expressed concern, condemned the incident terming it barbaric and unacceptable. “Everyone should be freely left to exercise their democratic right of choosing the he want," said one of the residents.
As the 2017 fever gathers momentum, more than 20 aspirants have thrown their hats in the ring with their sights on the parliamentary seat and are laying strategies to oust the incumbent MP Charles Mong’are Geni.
Geni has said he will seek re-election. Among aspirants eyeing the seat are Charles Patterson Otwori, Elijah Isaboke, Jason Mosinga, Kepha Keengwe, Joash Nyamache Nyamoko and Isaiah Nyaribo.
Meanwhile, politicians have been urged to exercise sobriety, unite residents, and observe peace during campaigns.
