A woman kidnapped by a wanted criminal in Nairobi escaped from her abductor on Monday morning after 20 hours in captivity.
Catherine Waithera was kidnapped while leaving Green Mall on Ngong Road on Sunday by the unarmed man at around 10.30am.
The kidnapper took Waithera's Toyota RunX car and drove it to Meru after he subdued the woman by tying her legs and hands and blindfolding her.
Waithera was driven to Githongo forest in Meru from where 27-year-old kidnapper contacted her relatives demanding a ransom.
Before escaping on Monday morning, Waithera requested to answer a call of nature which her abductor agreed to.
She managed to escape on foot and found her way to Kariene Police Station as the suspect was making a phone call.
At the time, however, the kidnapper had already received some money from Waithera’s family.
Later, police recovered the vehicle at a car wash in Gatimbi and arrested the suspect at Nkubu bus station.
The suspect, according to the police, hails from Kivue in Embu County and he is a wanted criminal in Nairobi.
He is being held at Meru Police Station and will be transferred to Nairobi.
