The prosecution told the court how Veronicah Njeri strangled her husband, Mr Christopher Kamau, on April 3 2012 at Kiptangwany village in Nakuru using a rope.

The court heard that the mother of three, who is a casual labourer, embarked on a mission to eliminate the deceased, blaming him of failure to provide for the family, unbridled drunkenness and allegedly having extra-marital affairs with other women.

The court further heard that she committed the offence single-handedly when the husband was drunk.

According to the prosecution, the deceased was found lying dead on the floor of the sitting room with a rope suspected to have been used to murder him hanging on his neck.

The woman was arrested at her home after police were informed of the incident by neighbours. She was taken to Elmentaita police station for interrogation before being arraigned in court.

Njeri, who appeared before Justice Anyara Emukule, has maintained innocence after she denied committing the offence, saying she loved her husband and could not plot to kill him. She also denied that she had any domestic brawls with the deceased.

The middle-aged woman, however, confirmed in court that her husband was a habitual drunkard and revealed that he was a bhang smoker who rarely took food. She told the court that her husband died due to starvation.

“He could not eat whenever l prepared food, instead, he took excessive chang’aa and bhang,” she told court.

The court is set to deliver its ruling on October 10 this year.
