A middle aged woman accused of leaving her son on the streets was arraigned in court and handed a year in jail for neglect her family. Martha Mumbi, 43, from Murera in Ruiru appeared before a Thika court Resident Magistrate Clare Bartoo and pleaded guilty. The charge sheet indicated that the accused who is a mother of three left for Rift Valley without involving his husband Anthony Gakumo. The court heard that Mumbi went for a promised job and left the father with the children without his consent. Gakumo, who was sick for seven months, and who was house-bound for medication told the court he did not realise the moving of their 9 year-old son to the street. It is after Thika children’s office received complaints from the public on the rowdy nature of the kid, which prompted action to be taken. The accused was later traced by the CID team in Thika town and later apprehended in Eldoret town as she was selling in a kiosk. The mother pleaded with the court for forgiveness citing that she would not repeat the same, but the magistrate declined. She was handed one year in jail without an option of fine with liberty to appeal in fourteen days. She was further warned against leaving his child again where the magistrate announced her verdict as a punishment for ignoring simple life rules.
