A Nyamira woman who allegedly assaulted her seven-year-old daughter by submerging her hands in hot water has been arrested.

Bokeira Police Station Sargent Pius Kipkorir said Teressa Omare was arrested on Sunday after the incident was reported to the station.

Ms Omare is said to have submerged her daughter’s hands in hot water after the daughter reportedly stole a twenty shillings coin.

Speaking on Sunday to Hivisasa.com, Kipkorir said police had managed to arrest the woman after she allegedly took refuge in the neighbouring Mawawa village to avoid arrest.

“She ran away on Friday after committing the heinous crime but we pursued her and managed to arrest her in Mawawa," KIpkorir said.

"She is currently in Nyamira Police Station and as police responsible, we are investigating the crime to prosecute the case."

He urged local residents to desist from using authoritative means when instilling discipline against their children and warned of dire consequences.

“Residents must respect humanity if they want a smooth relationship with the government," he said.

"Torturing young ones is illegal and we will not hesitate as the police to take actions. There is a proper way of disciplining a child."

Speaking separately in Nyamira hospital when she paid a courtesy call to the child, human rights activist Catherine Nyamato condemned the incident and called upon the judiciary to act so that it serves as an example to the rest.

“This is completely inhuman and it hurts that a mother can do this to her child," she said.

"I urge the courts to deliver justice so that she serves as an example to brutal mothers."
