A woman who had at one time allegedly fled from a Kisumu court shortly after being convicted of murdering her husband was on Wednesday sentenced to 30 years in prison.
While giving his judgement, Justice David Majanja ruled that though the accused Martha Auma had claimed that she was compelled by armed gunmen to strangle her husband using a belt, strangling was a voluntary action which she could otherwise have declined.
“ I, therefore, find you guilty of the murder of Jared Otieno and sentence you to 30 years in custodial sentences,” stated Justice Majanja.
Her lawyer tried to beg the Judge for a much lighter sentence stating that her client was a widow, a mother and a sole breadwinner to her three years old minor.
Justice Majanja, however, insisted that he had considered all evidence and that 30 years imprisonment was the most lenient punishment the law prescribed for the crime Auma committed.
Ms Auma made headlines last month when she mysteriously disappeared from the court area after being convicted of murdee.
She was later presented before the court on March 22 by her lawyer Steve Odumbe who noted that she did not escape but was misguided by the sentry in court.
