A middle aged woman was on Sunday rescued by police in Juja after an angry mob wanted to lynch her when she allegedly tried to deposit fake Sh70 000 in an Mpesa shop.
This comes a week after an Mpesa agent deposited Sh40 000 for the woman and the currency was fake.
According to area business people, the woman has been spotted lately and she has deposited a lot of money in different Mpesa shops all the way from Ruiru.
Mpesa shop agent Daniel Mwau said that he was alerted three weeks ago about circulation of fake currency targeting their business. He said that the woman was identified by one of their colleague who was conned Sh70 000 a week ago.
‘’She changes locations when she knows what she's done in the area. She started in Ruiru and now she was here and had already done her mischief,’’ said Mwai.
Caroline Mueni, the agent who was allegedly tricked a week ago told Hivisasa that she identified the arrested woman because she conned her a week ago.
‘’I screamed and within minutes she was surrounded and soon enough the police were here to rescue her,’’ said Mueni.
Juja OCPD SSP Isaac Thuranira confirming the incident said that the woman was arrested with Sh120 000 fake currency and further explained that cases of circulation of fake currency were on the rise in the region.
‘’We are conducting investigations and we also have sent officers to check the place the woman lives in Ruiru. We believe this is a business she is not alone in and we are going to arrest the rest,’’ said Thuranira.
He assured the business fraternity in the region of safety in terms of currency but also urged them to be very careful with currency they receive as the fake currencies are in circulation.
