Women and girls in Kisumu County have been challenged not to condone gender based violence (GVB), by reporting cases perpetrated against them.
Ms. Roseline Ounga, an officer at the Kisumu based Local Capacities for Peace International (LCPI) said women and girls must refuse to be part of GBV in order to help win the war against the vice.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday, Ms Onunga said that cases of GBV against women in the region are on the rise, due to the fact that many women choose to suffer in silence.
“Speak. Refuse to keep quiet. Do not suffer in silent. Report the matter to the police if an act of GBV is perpetrated against you,” she urged women.
She said that reporting GBV cases opens avenues for the survivor to get proper medical attention, and in the end justice. “If you are for example raped or defiled and you decide to keep quiet, you may end up contacting a dangerous disease,” she warned.
Ms. Onunga said that although both and men and women can suffer from gender based violence, women and girls are the most vulnerable.
Her sentiments came as Kenyans continue to join the world in marking this year’s 16 international days of activism against gender based violence.
The 16 days started on November 25, and will come to an end on December 10.
