As the world marked the International Women's Day on March 8, 2018, women in Nakuru county have been challenged to take advantage of the mandatory 30% tender allocation for women and youths and better their lives economically.

Speaking when she graced the county celebrations at Nakuru’s Kimathi grounds, County Executive Committee (CeC) in charge of Gender, Youth and Sports Halima Gababa said the 30% tender allocation for women and youths is a good platform for women in the county to better their lives.

She added that they will also make huge economic contribution not only to their families but also the country at large.

Gababa said the county government of Nakuru has ensured all ministries allocate 30% of their tenders to women, youth and persons living with disabilities.

The CeC said that Nakuru governor Lee Kinyanjui is committed to the empowerment of women .

“Governor Lee Kinyanjui believes in women empowerment and leadership and that is why in his cabinet we have three women and more importantly we have a woman in charge of the gender ministry,” she said

She said that the county government sponsored gender bill which is in the second reading stage will help in fully realizing the empowerment and representation of women in the county.

Gababa said that her ministry has already formulated a policy to guide the implementation and use of the gender bill

“The gender bill which is in its second reading stage will ensure that we achieve equal representation for our women and I have already formulated a policy which will guide the implementation of the bill once the county assembly passes it,” said Gababa

Nakuru county women Representative Liza Chelule called on women to form groups which will enable them benefit from the affirmative action fund under her office.

She also urged women to take the lead in environment conservation by planting trees during this rainy season.
