The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu), has called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), to assure workers that next week's general elections will be free and fair.

Secretary General Francis Atwoli said only a handful of Kenyans will be able to help themselves and their families, in case violence erupts, similar to what happened during the 2007/2008 general elections.

Speaking after he led Cotu officials for a courtesy call to IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati and his Commissioners, Atwoli sought the assurance that the elections will be free, fair and credible, adding that failure to do so its workers, women and children will suffer the consequences.

He also called on stakeholders to help the Commission conduct a credible poll, with Chebukati's team reassuring that the Commission’s commitment is to deliver credible poll, regardless of what any setbacks.

Meanwhile, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) held a meeting in Limuru, Kiambu County, to discuss the elections preparedness, Tuesday.

The meeting chaired by NCCK Secretary General Canon Peter Karanja, saw Acting Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i in-attendance.

He affirmed that the government was doing everything to ensure all senior IEBC staff are provided with the required security, and at the same time provide security to Kenyans ahead of polls.
