Machakos county Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) chairperson Francisca Mutinda has challenged women to apply for government funds and start small businesses.
Addressing various women groups at Kathiani Sub County on Friday, Mutinda asked women to grab the opportunities being offered by the government and improve their socio-economic lives.
He said that women have been given a chance to enhance their lives and that they should not hesitate to seek development funds.
“Machakos women should apply for the money being given by the county and the national government and better their lives,” she said.
The county women chair observed that for a long time women were kept in the dark on matters development but the constitution has given them light.
She added that the constitution recognizes the role women play in socio-economic development and prosperity.
Mutinda indicated that empowering women will go a long way in addressing challenges facing the society especially poverty.
She also urged women to come out and engage in matters governance saying they have the same rights as their men counterparts.
“Women should not fear to seek leadership and elective governance positions,” she said.
The chair at the same time said that time is ripe for Kenya to have female president. She observed that men have had their own share and that its time for women.
Mutinda further urged women to support activities that will foster unity among the society. She said there is no need for hatred and that Machakos people should strive to embrace each other.
She urged the county government to put in place policies that will fight poverty and unemployment especially among the young people.
