Ms Wanjiru said that cultural diversities are under threat from western ideologies and there is need to stem the wave from putting them at the periphery of collapse.

Speaking yesterday at Kiambu Town during the launch of the group, Wanjiru called for concerted efforts to preserve cultural diversity.

“Our culture is falling apart due to external influences and putting it at risk,” said Ms Wanjiru.

The group is involved in making of cultural items like kiondos, clothes (kitenge) and other items with cultural outlook.

Wanjiru said that the group has provided income to its members and has stimulated employment.

“We are able to generate income from selling our products especially to tourists,” said Wanjiru, adding that, “with the proceeds we are able to support our families.”

She called on the national government and the devolved government to support the group in expanding their enterprises to benefit more women.

“We would like both government units to empower us and help us realise our dreams,” said Wanjiru.

Beatrice Muthoni, a member of the group said that the initiative has made them not to depend on their husbands to cater for minor expenses.

She urged other women to join the group to be financially independent.
