Kenyans have been asked to maintain peace and unity especially at this time that the country is headed to the general elections.
This was the key message from hundreds of women and youths drawn from Uasin Gishu county who on Thursday held a peace walk themed 'Chagua Mama, Chagua Amani' in Eldoret town.
Speaking to the press after the walk, Winfrey Kimeu from the National Women Steering Committee said Women, Children and the Disabled are usually the most affected groups in the event of political violence.
"We holding similar events in other 9 counties across the country experiencing heightened political temperatures and our message is for the people to remain peaceful before, during and after the polls," said Kimeu.
Similar sentiments were shared by Mercy Jelimo of Women's Empowerment link who challenged security agencies to put in place measures that will ensure women are well protected in the remaining period to the election day as well as after the elections.
Earlier, a group of Uasin Gishu residents also held a separate peace walk and pledged to maintain peace before and after the polls. While flagging off the walk, Deputy County Commissioner in charge of Soy Sub county Ali Hassan Bule assured that security had been enhanced across the county.
"Anybody who will try to corrupt the peace and unity we are enjoying today just because of an election will be deal with ruthlessly," he said.
