Residents of Kibera have called on MPs to support the bill of two –third gender rule as the bill enters its second reading stage in parliament.
The bill will allow both genders have equal number of MPs or ensure that no gender occupies more than 2/3 seats in parliament.
The bill has been well received by the Kibera MP, Ken Okoth who said he is in favour of the bill.
‘‘We have many women in the country. They are educated and can carry out duties like men. I support the bill. We need to give our women equal treatment,’’ he said.
Kibera women also said they believe it is time women should take leadership positions in government.
‘‘If a woman is the head, we are sure of the quality representation of women in society. Very few men will understand the pleas of women in society. We cannot also use one woman or two to represent us. We need many in parliament so that our voices can be heard. This will, however, be achieved through the two- third gender rule,’’ said Monica Waweru, one of the residents of the area.
