The chairlady of Maendeleo ya wanawake in Masinga Constituency in Machakos County Veronica Muasya has called upon the County government to provide farmers with seeds.
Speaking on Monday while addressing the press in Masinga town, Muasya urged Machakos governor to consider ensuring that the seeds are provided early enough for the planting season before the rains begin.
“The County government, led by governor Mutua should provide Machakos residents with seeds in preparation for the planting season as the residents have already cleared their farms so that immediately the rains begin they start planting,” said Muasya.
Muasya further stated by doing so, the government will help avoid a condition of hunger crisis if the support will reach the farmers on good time.
The rains are expected at the end of April, after which the farmers who will not have the seeds will not sow their crops.
“If the government acts now, the families who have not prepared their farms due to lack of money to purchase the seeds will get encouraged and clear them as soon as possible,” she added.
These comes at a time when leaders and residents of Machakos County have been faced with hunger, pleading with the government for relief food.
This follows low rainfall experienced in the region during the December rainy season, which led to low or no harvest in many regions of the County.
