Led by Magarini Ward representative Mrs Elina Mbaru, the leaders said the rate at which school girls were getting pregnant was alarming, noting that the menace is affecting students as young as 12.

Speaking to journalists in Mombasa Town on Saturday, Mbaru called for joint efforts among stakeholders in the education sector to curb early pregnancies, which she said have contributed to the rise in school drop outs in the recent past.

“It is a pity to see one school with over 17 pregnant girls every term. This tells us something needs to be done now or else we will have no girls in school,” she said.

The ward rep accused parents of failing to guide their children claiming that they instead encourage them to engage in sex in exchange for money.

On her part, Kilifi County Women Representative Mrs Aisha Jumwa called for the banning of night discos saying they have been a contributing factor to teenage pregnancies.

She asked county commissioners to cooperate with governors in ensuring disco owners are not given permits.

They further called for urgent measures to bring the vice to an end.
