The institution of marriage is one of the most controversial especially in the modern times.
With modernity has come gender equity and feminism which are both about empowering the female gender and championing for women rights and those of the girl child.
With the family being the basic unit of society, whatever happens in the family is a reflection of what that society is like.
The girl child now goes to school and her mother being a modern woman, teaches her about being a successful and independent lady when she grows up.
The society has therefore been filled with modernity even in terms of social roles and responsibilities.
Marriages have thus become a difficult union to be in since the days of the man being the head and the woman the neck are long gone.
The man is no longer the one who gives orders in the house and the wife submissively obeys.
Marriage is nowadays viewed as a partnership whereby both parties have equal rights. As such, the man does not have the right to make a family decision without consulting his wife.
Gender equity in marriages also means that duties too are shared equally and there are no duties for men and those for women. This is because women work in offices too unlike olden days when women stayed at home to do the household chores.
To many modern women, it beats logic to arrive home later than him and find him laying on a couch toying around with a TV remote instead of cooking. If both of you arrive at the same time, it's expected that you both share the evening duties and later rest together since both of you are tired.
However, some men are finding it difficult to stomach a modern lady in marriage and others find doing household chores demeaning.
As a result, some educated men are opting going for uneducated girls for marriage who can never object anything despite of how oppressive it might be.
Some men too feel threatened by modern educated women who challenge them since the pride in them does not allow them to be challenged by the female gender.
Change always faces resistance in the first days but with time people start accepting it and it's time the men accept these are different times and gender equity is probably here to stay.
