Scores of women protested in Maai–Mahiu, Naivasha Sub County on Monday over what they termed as laxity by the provincial administration to curb sale and consumption of illicit liquor.

The procession of women waving twigs brought the businesses activities to a standstill as they marched through the trading centre.

“The chiefs should use their authority to end the sale and consumption of illicit liquor and save our marriages from collapsing,” said Irene Wambui, one of the protesters.

They said that the sale and consumption of illegal liquor has destabilised many youthful families and the situation is getting worse by the day.

“My two sons have become alcoholics. They have been lured by mama pimas to their dens and they rarely return home,” said Monica Wachuka.

The women blamed female brewers for the flourishing illicit liquor trade.

“Every cent they earn goes to female brewers. We are left to take care of our families single-handedly,” said Mary Mwangi, another protestor.

They also alleged that they do not get their conjugal rights as a result of the illicit brew menace.

The women urged National Authority for Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada) to intervene and eliminate the consumption of the illicit liquor.

Maai-Mahiu has been on the spot following constant cases of deaths resulting from consumption of illicit liquor.
