A Nakuru town based Publisher and Literary Activist has lashed out to Kenyan women claiming that they are not fond of reading as compared to men.
This was observed on Friday by Zack Musembu, Managing Editor of Focal Publishers based in Nakuru who also represents Kenya in the continental African Publishers Network (APNET) organisation.
The literary activist said this when he addressed participants at a Reading Tent Week at the Kenya National Library Services-Nakuru brach.
Musembi noted that many Kenyan women rarely read or watch current awareness news and professional literature but rather are interested in entertainment materials in magazines and television which do not add value to their lives.
“It has been my personal observation but I would like to make it public that our women dislike engaging in serous reading. What they can find time for are the soap opera and Nigerian movies and few entertainment materials in magazines but they rarely read news and professional materials as compared to men,’’ asserted Musembi.
According to the activist, men are aggressively involved in many socio-economic and political affairs in the Kenyan society because they are more informed than women.
She encouraged young women in schools and colleges to abandon the non-reading culture in order for them to take up active roles in society now and in future.
