Women will resist any attempt to scrap any position that was created for them in the constitution.
Kisumu Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) chair lady Atieno Otieno said that it has been a struggle to ensure women get those positions. Otieno said women will not accept any move to scrap certain seats that benefits women as enshrined in the new constitution.
She urged women to go for other elective positions and wondered why women positions are targeted for scrapping.
“They talked of bloated positions and now the target is women positions, we will not accept and women must fight to ensure what the constitution gave them remains,” she said.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Thursday after meeting her members, Otieno said women deserved the seats and that does not confine them only to such positions.
She told women to fight for their rights and stop waiting for free goodies. She noted that women must ensure that they form the decision-making team at the counties.
“I want tell women that nobody will invite them on the decision making table, please my fellow women don’t wait to be invited, pull the chair and join them (men) at the decision making table,” she said.
Otieno says that despite women being vulnerable, they must stand up and be counted and not to relinquish positions to men.
