Ebenezer Women Support Group in Athi River town, Machakos County has opted for commercial rabbits rearing to boost their income alongside other income generating activities (IGA) with the money received from Fund initiatives.
The group has 300 rabbits specifically for commercial purposes and they plan to increase the numbers so that they expand to a bigger enterpreneur.
Addressing press in Athi River on Thursday, the group's chairperson Amina Halkano said they invested in the project as a way of making their lives better and also to boost their standard of living.
"We as a group realised that there was a gap in the market since there was no regular supply of rabbit meat in Athi River and its environs, hence we took advantage of the opportunity," said Halkano.
She disclosed that there was increasingly high demand for the meat including individuals who wanted to start rabbit farms in the region and its environs.
Halkano said the business had been overlooked as majority of entrepreneurs only concentrated on keeping big animals such as cows, goats, pigs and sheep.
She said the business had been left for children in the region and therefore there venture into the industry became a laughing stock to majority of the residents.
The chairperson advised women from Ukambani to shun choice of jobs and businesses and instead do any kind of businesses and jobs so long as they were legal to improve their standards of living.
