Kisumu women representative Rose Nyamunga has asked the State to commission six dams in Kisumu County to deal with food security challenges.
Speaking in Kisumu yesterday Nyamunga said that the National government owes dams in Nyando and Muhoroni sub counties.
"The biggest problem in Kisumu County is that we dont have food security," said Nyamunga.
She said that most of the vegetables consumed in the county comes from Rift Valley and other neighbouring counties.
"We can no longer rely on rain fed agriculture. It is time we revert to irrigated agricultural practises. Our women and youth are hardworking but what lets them down is lack of water," she said.
She added: "Nyando and Muhoroni frequently and perennially suffer alot of floods. If we have the dam from River Nyando,Nandi and Koru that will help a lot." Nyamunga.
Nyamunga said that Kisumu needed the dams so that it could be food secured.
"Unless we empower our women we will not be liberated from the hands of poverty and diseases. It is important that we produce our own food and sell to other counties," she said.
