Speaking during the Council of Elders for Prevention of Electoral Violence Summit at Hillpark Hotel in Kwale, Human Rights Agenda (HURIA) Executive Director Mr Yusuf Lule said the debate is aimed at empowering the electorate to make informed decisions in August 8 polls.

He further said the debate will provide a platform for aspirants sell their manifestos to voters since not everyone can be reached during campaigns.

“Some of the candidates may not have resources to move and explain their agenda to all locals thus the need to hold the debate,” said Mr Lule.

Lule urged members of the public to attend the event, adding that transport will be provided for those who wish to participate.

The seat has attracted contestants from different parties including Zainab Chidzuga (Jubilee), ODM’s Zuleikha Hassan and Party for Development Reforms (PDR) candidate Fatuma Tabwara.

On his part, Kwale County Kaya Elders Chairperson Mr Abdallah Nyenze urged residents to vote for aspirants based on their agenda.

He residents need to elect leaders who will exploit resources in a bid to uplift their living standards.

“I urge everyone to embrace peace and vote wisely during the forthcoming elections. Let us elect leaders who will help our men and women secure a better living,” said Nyenze.
