Nyamira Women Rep Alice Chae believes major parties did ‘very little’ in mobilizing their troops in the house to pass the much anticipated Gender Bill.
The Bill failed to garner required two-thirds threshold to be law after only 178 MPs voted in its favour instead of the required 233.
But Chae, who spoke to the reporter on phone, blamed leadership of major parties for failing to sensitize their members on the Bill which may throw the country into a constitutional crisis if it’s not passed.
“Honestly I think major parties failed Kenyan women because not enough was done within their Parliamentary Group meetings to mobilize their troops ahead of the Bill,” she said.
“It’s from these parties that we were to have a common stand ahead of the voting but at least no party convened a PG. This is a dark day for Kenyan women I think major parties should take responsibility over the constitutional crisis that we are almost heading to,” she added.
She challenged Cord and Jubilee coalitions affiliate parties to hold special meeting to find an alternative solution over the predicament.
“There is still much hope and it lies within Cord and Jubilee. Our parties should sit down and come up with other means of fulfilling these constitutional requirements,” she added.
