[Garissa Women Representative aspirant Ms Annab Gure with a group of non-local women in Garissa town] (File)A Garissa Jubilee Party Women Representative aspirant Ms Annab Gure has said that the Women representative position will give more women in North Eastern a chance to seek leadership positions.
Ms Gure said that women from pastoralist communities were avoiding elective posts because their culture did not allow women to compete with men in politics.
“The creation of the seat was long overdue, especially for the residents of Northeastern whose women have been locked out of leadership positions because of culture,” she said.
The women rep aspirant also told Kenyans that the woman representative position is just as important as the other elective posts adding that they should stop viewing the seat negatively.
Speaking in Garissa, Ms Gure said the elders used the opportunity to deny potential women the opportunity to articulate issues touching on their fellow women and the youth.
The Jubilee candidate said women and youth missed out in leadership positions due to domination by the male aspirants who are supported by the elders in negotiated democracy.
She however said that this is starting to change since more women have come out to seek elective leadership positions after proving that they are able to deliver on their mandate adding that she is more than qualified to seek any leadership position.
“Having worked in the NGO world and in government I have a wealth of experience to lead and utilize public resources for the benefit of all the residents irrespective whether they elected me or not,” she said.
