Speaking at a women meeting in Athi River town on Saturday, Kamau said that savings is a sure way of liberating women from dependency.

"As a woman you need to start a habit of keeping some money for yourself. Either as an individual or through Saccos,” advised Kamau.

She said that most women in the region were living from hand to mouth, a situation she referred to as a very risky style of living.

The officer disclosed that majority of women depended on their husbands including those who had jobs or credible businesses.

“It is very dangerous as women to live such a life. We need to invest as women,” said Kamau adding that children from families without credible savings suffered whenever their parents passed on or separated.

“Some women even fail to educate their children past primary schools, especially when their husbands die because they do not save,” reiterated Kamau.

The officer said women would be better placed if they develop a saving culture.
