Miriam Wangari, the Chairperson of Bahati Women Self-Group, has urged more women to form merry-go-round groups to empower them financially.
Speaking on Monday at Bahati Trading Centre during the group’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Wangari said the concept of table banking has played a crucial role in empowering rural women.
“The idea of table banking has shaped many lives of women by empowering them financially,” said Wangari.
Wangari added that many women are able to support their families without assistance from their spouses as a result of these groups.
“Akina mama are able to address some of the pressing domestic problems in their homes without consulting their male counterparts,” said Wangari.
She further urged more women to emulate the Bahati Women Self-Group and form groups to champion their financial rights.
“With as little as Sh5000, a woman can borrow from the group and start a kiosk that will enable her to put food on the table for her family,” added the Chair.
She also urged the women to apply for funds from women funds like Uwezo Fund, to enable them expand their enterprises.
During the occasion, the participants received dividends and hailed the movement of table banking.
“We want to mobilize more women to join and forms groups to grow our portfolio investment that will enable us get economically empowered,” said Susan Waithera, one of the shareholders of the group.
Wangari however urged the members not to misuse the bonus in this festive season, but to invest it in school fees or other income-generating ventures.
