A caucus of leaders who have been holding meetings to promote Gusii unity has come under fire for locking women and youth out of its agenda.
The caucus composed of Senator Chris Obure, former Commission on Implementation of the Institution (CIC) Mr Charles Nyachae, eight of the county’s nine sitting National Assembly members and a section of MCAs.
Youth leaders have dismissed the leaders’ recent trip to State House as driven by selfish interests by saying that the caucus had ignored the plight of women and youth.
Led by Mr Vincent Mose they have appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to reach out to youth in the region instead of relying on what he termed as aging politicians to secure the Jubilee vote.
“We wonder why our president and his deputy who are young leaders would entertain suggestions on how to secure Jubilee votes in the region from leaders that have been around since independence and forget the youths who have the power of transforming this nation,” he said.
Speaking at Nyamasibi, Nyaribari Masaba, the leaders announced the formation of a new team christened “Team Change” to push for changes in the county government.
Mr Geoffrey Nyaberi from Bassi Bogetaorio Ward said that the leaders had betrayed their people by going to seek favors from State House.
“We enacted a new constitution that devolved development to the counties. The issue of going to State House on the pretext of seeking development for our people does not count,” he said.
He said that county youth would no longer be taken for granted and was now determined to vie for seats in each of the county’s 45 wards.
“We are determined to present a new generation of leaders to the people. This is because our current crop of leaders is only interested in securing personal benefits at the expense of development for the people,” he said.
