Workers in Nakuru have been urged to strive at being well versed with the vast occupational health standards and procedures, in order to champion for their rights at the place of work.
This was remarked on Wednesday by the Nakuru County Labour Officer Lawrence Karanja when he addressed staff members of Egerton University Nakuru Town Campus, during a one day Occupational Health Workshop that was held at the campus.
Karanja observed that many workers in the country were ignorant of occupational health standards and rights, thus exposing themselves to danger and exploitation by their employers.
While congratulating Egerton University management for promoting occupational health awareness among its employees, the labour officer noted that there was need for all cadres of employers; both private and public, to sensitize their workers on occupational health issues in order to provide efficient and sustainable risk management standards in the country.
“It is important that every employee and employer strives at ensuring that matters of occupational health are adhered to at all times. The employee should not be left in the dark on his or her rights while the employer should not be made to carry the burden of any risk at the work place. Such forums are important because they balance the equation,” said Karanja.
