The Ministry of Sports and Heritage has summoned Kenyan referee, Aden Marwa over alleged bribery claims.
In an expose aired last week done by a Ghanaian journalist, Marwa was caught on camera allegedly receiving a Sh60,000 bribe from an undercover reporter during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.
This led to him being kicked out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where he was to officiate matches. Speaking in Nyeri on Tuesday, Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa said the government wants Marwa to shed more light on the bribery claims and match-fixing.
“We have summoned the football officials and we are waiting for them to tell us exactly what happened. As a ministry we believe that we will take action against the referee,” Echesa said.
Marwa, a chemistry teacher loses out on Sh2.5 million he would have made while officiating the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in light of the bribery allegations against him. He has climbed up the ladder in his football career to become one of Kenya’s most respected match officials.
Marwa has also made a name for himself in the African continent with his latest appearance at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament held in Gabon.
