Residents of Witeithie estate in Juja sub-county have been warned of a possible outbreak of diseases due to the current unhygienic state of the area.
Speaking to residents during a public meeting, the Kiambu County public health officer Flora Gakui said that the residents, and mostly the kids, are at a risk of contracting diseases such as malaria, typhoid and cholera.
Gakui added that immediate action has to be taken to prevent any such occurrences.
The warning came after all the dumpsites in the area were banned and a warning issued to residents against dumping waste in undesignated areas. The warning said that those found disposing of waste in pits or along the roads will be prosecuted.
“We have to take action before we are hit by the dangerous killer diseases. I have ordered the sub-county officers to conduct operations both day and night to ensure anyone dumping waste illegally is arrested and prosecuted," insisted Gakui.
The residents have argued that the county government does not do the weekly door-to-door garbage collection as it is in Juja and Thika towns and thus forcing them to dump on the roadsides.
Gakui agreed to their request of a weekly garbage collection.
