Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the 2007/2008 Post Election Violence living in Yamumbi, Eldoret have lauded President Kenyatta for the public apology he made to the nation during the State of the Nation address on Thursday, last week.
Speaking to journalists on Monday at Yamumbi camp where they have been living since 2008, the IDPs expressed optimism with the new turn of events, saying they will be able to heal now.
“I was happy for that apology that the President made and though we were not compensated when others were being resettled, we have hope that the money the president ordered to be set aside will help us start a new life,” said Diana Njoki.
The IDPs now want action to be taken against those who misuse money set aside for their resettlement, saying that they are the people contributing to their suffering seven years later.
“Let the President put stringent measures to ensure that those who sabotage the resettlement of IDPs are dealt with. In Uasin Gishu County alone we are five camps,” said Mary Muthoni, another IDP.
They have further requested the government to make the money available as soon as possible, saying the life in the camps is unbearable.
