Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi wants the national government to set aside more funds to help cater for the needs of elderly in the constituency.
Speaking on Tuesday at Yatta town, Mwangangi intimated that most elderly persons in the area are suffering.
He said that the funds set aside by the government for elderly persons have not reached Yatta, adding that there is need for establishment of a development kitty for the elderly in each county.
“Each county government should establish a kitty for the elderly people to enable them cope with the high living standards,” he said.
The MP noted that poverty is ravaging the area and that such kitties will help people who are of age and can’t work.
He urged elderly persons in the area to apply for monthly stipends being given by the national government.
Meanwhile, the MP has warned public officials especially chiefs against stealing relief food and other items meant for the vulnerable.
He said that the trend is common in some parts of the area where relief food is stolen.
“The government will take stern action against public officers caught in misconducts,” he said.
The MP urged public officials to exercise accountability and serve residents diligently.
