Residents and leaders of Matuu, Sophia, Kithimani and Iviani in Yatta Sub-county over the weekend gathered to celebrate World Women’s Day.

Speaking during the celebrations in Iviani location at the chiefs camp, area assistant County Commissioner Francisca Kahakai stated that the National and County governments are willing to continue offering support and respect to women.

“The government is willing to continue supporting women in our nation and this county. A prove is the Uwezo fund from the government that is helping the women and youth to improve their income and livelihoods,” said Kahakai.

“Let us support our leaders that we have chosen to represent out needs in the government. We will not however stop fighting for women’s’ right,” she added.

In attendance was Matuu area OCS Gladys Wanjala, and Matuu location Chief Susan King’oo.

Wanjala called upon the women to do their duties of preserving peace both at home, and their surrounding environments.

“It is our duty as women to talk and observe peace in our homes and even at country level. We are the pillars of our homes; if we observe peace our homes and country will experience peace and security,” said Wanjala

Susan Kingoo urged the women to respect their husbands, as they are the head of the home, according to religion and society values.

The International Women’s Day is marked annually world-wide on March 8 every year since 1911.
