Lower Yatta residents, Kitui county have accused the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) of duping them into selling their land at cheaper rates.
The residents claim the rates offered as compensation by the company were much lower than what they had initially priced their parcels of land.
One of the residents who sort anonymity said he had previously bought his land at Sh 90,000, and had built a house at a cost of approximately Sh 30,000, but the company only offered Sh 80,000 compensation.
“The money being offered is very little and I am not ready to take it,” he said as quoted by Citizen.
Residents say the power company started digging the holes but didn’t inform them until they complained. "That’s when they came with papers offering cheap payments for the land,” said another resident.
They claim that they use their land for subsistence farming and the KETRACO should compensate them decently.
