According to Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed, the man identified as Walid Ahmed Sultan was arrested in Likoni area after a resident tipped off the police.

An intelligence source who spoke to the Standard, alleged that the man raised suspicion after he started inquiring about Yemen-bound ships.

The source said that Sultan was handed over to the authorities by a tuk-tuk driver.

It is not yet clear why he was arrested, but according to Maalim, the man came to Mombasa on Friday evening through Somalia raising suspicion about his exact mission.

"A man has been arrested at Likoni ferry and we have since established that he is a Yemeni and entered Kenya from Somalia and he served as a military officer. He will tell us what his mission is in Mombasa," Maalim said.

Police are yet to determine which military faction Sultan belonged to, considering that Yemen military was divided into two groups following the five-year civil war being experienced in the Middle East country.

The County Commissioner has been on the forefront urging local residents to be keen and report any suspicious person in an effort to fight and terrorism.
