Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has faulted the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) leaders over their quest to have Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) disbanded saying that their move is political.

Speaking when he issued certificates to beneficiaries of the Vusha Youth Empowerment Programme at Kiambu headquarters on Wednesday, Kabogo said the move by Cord leaders and their supporters to storm IEBC offices is not the right way to seek address to their issues.

He stated that while Cord might have concerns over IEBC the way and the manner they are approaching the matter is not right.

“Opposition leaders led by Raila Odinga should stop creating political tension in their quest to have IEBC disbanded,” he said.

The Kiambu governor said that there are proper channels through which Cord can seek dialogue with IEBC over contagious issues.

“For opposition leaders to call mass action among their supporters and camp at the IEBC is not the right way to address issues, they should know that they are not above the law,” added Kabogo.

Kabogo observed that it was important for opposition leaders to respect independent offices.

On Monday, Cord leaders led hundreds of their supporters in storming IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers but their plan was thwarted by police who fired tear gas to disperse them.

The opposition leaders have since called on their supporters to camp at the IEBC offices on Tuesday next week in their efforts to have IEBC commissioners sent home.

Cord has accused the electoral commission of being influenced by external factors. The opposition leaders have threatened to boycott the 2017 general elections if IEBC will be the one conducting the polls.
