A civil society organisation has criticised a move by Governor Anyang' Nyong'o to ban protests in Kisumu.

Civil Society Reference Group presiding convener Suba Churchill on Friday said Nyong'o has no powers to issue such orders.

"The directive constitutes an ominous threat to civil liberties as guaranteed in the Constitution for citizens who want to express themselves," said Churchill in Kisumu.

The county boss outlawed demonstrations in the lakeside city they are called by the National Super Alliance (NASA) or ODM leadership.

Nyong'o said Kisumu has been a target where criminals take advantage of the street protest to destroy and loot properties.

He said the Opposition had agreed that protests would only be conducted in Nairobi.

"Anybody demonstrating in Kisumu county will only do so when the party leader says so. Police will deal with those who defy this directive," said Nyong'o.
