Jane Wangari has said that all children who are born at home ought to be registered before they are six months old.

Wangari says that they have realised that many parents in various places in the county who give birth at home do not report the births as required by law.

"To register your child at the assistant chief's office before they are six months old is free of charge; you just need to go there and get a notification note," said Wangari.

She added: "If you extend beyond that, when you are coming for the child's birth certificate you will be fined or get jailed or both."

Wangari says that early reporting of the child's birth helps a faster processing of child's birth certificate as well as help the government in future planning.

"Parents have to come to the realisation that reporting births is not only beneficial to them but also to the government," she said.

Wangari was speaking in the Kiambu Registration of Births office today.
