Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission should be held accountable in case of any dispute that could culminate to Post-Election Violence in 2017 polls, observes Senator Janet Ong’era.
Her remarks come hours after the defiant commission vowed to stay in office despite mounting pressure from the opposition (Cord) to quit office due to alleged partiality.
But Ong’era has remained critical on the commission accusing it of incompetence and calling for its reconstitution for the sake of peace.
“I want to challenge IEBC to quit office or to be ready to be held accountable in case of any dispute in 2017 polls," said Ong'era.
"Most groups are of the opinion that they quit office and I am shocked that they are not ready to heed the calls,” she said.
“The commission is basically compromised and I don’t see those holding credible polls. If they insist on staying at the office, they must be ready to carry the biggest responsibility in case political parties disagree on the presidential outcome,” she said.
The former ODM Chief Executive maintained the party will continue holding demonstrations against the commission and push for radical surgery in electoral reforms.
“As ODM, we do not want to entertain such a commission. They should be always ready to face us in demonstrations because that is what they want," said Ong'era.
"This commission cannot single-handedly control the destiny of Kenya,” she said.
