Helb Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera has said that in future, students whose parents fail to repay their loans would be denied the funds.
Ringera said the students will only access the money once their parents start to repay their loans.
“Last year, out of the 34,000 applicants for loans that we received, 16,000 parents guaranteed their children. Of the 16,000, we discovered that 6,000 were loan defaulters,” he said.
The Helb CEO also raised concern over misuse of the money by students.
He was speaking on Tuesday at Kenyatta University during the first biennial conference on the State of Higher Education.
The Loans Board is expected to disburse Sh3.1 billion to at least 76,000 students by October this year.
