Yusuf Mohammed said that sports are very useful in uniting youth hence urging them to desist from criminal activities.

The program dubbed ‘Old town sport for development’ incorporates sports and mentorship activities aimed at changing youth and making them responsible people in the society.

Addressing a youth forum at Kuze area in Oldtown, Mohammed said that the program has been very effective in containing crime in Old town area.

 “We also encourage youth to value education, get spiritual guidance, always obey their parents and get involved in sports,” he said.

Yusuf said that the group also creates awareness on the negative impact of drug abuse among the youth in Mombasa.

He said that youth in the area have been working with women activists towards eliminating juvenile criminal gangs in the area.

“We also visit homes, meeting youth together with their parents in efforts to discourage them from indulging in crime” he added.

The youth and sports program is implemented in partnership with human rights body Haki Africa.
