Youth from Nguluni Sub-Location in Mwala Sub-County, have raised concerned over stalled dam construction projects in the area.
Speaking on Monday during a meeting chaired by Morris Mutunga, a youth representative, the youth said Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua had promised to construction several dams in Yathui, but he is yet to fulfil his promise.
"As young people who are faced by the challenge of unemployment, Mutua gave us hope during his campaigns by promising dams which would enable us engage in irrigation farming as a source of self employment. We voted for him in large numbers but he has not fulfilled his promise to us. We call upon him to initiate completion of the dams, so that we can empower ourselves economically," said Mutunga.
The youth claimed the county government only cleared the land where the dams were supposed to be constructed and abandoned the tractors at the site.
They said if the projects had been completed on time, majority of the youth in the area would have engaged in agriculture thus becoming economically independent.
Mutunga said youth in the area have the will and energy to work but lack opportunities, adding that completion of the dam projects would be a life changing opportunity for most of them.
